Development of today's information systems must take a service-centric approach. The drive is toward designing service-centric systems involving well-defined, loosely coupled services that are reusable, discoverable, and composable. To promote service interoperability, usability, and efficiency in such systems, extending existing solutions with semantics offers better integration that's more adaptive to changes throughout the system's lifetime. This article is part of a special issue on service-centric software systems.
