Widespread use of networked computers has made computer security a serious issue. Every networked computer, to varying degrees, is vulnerable to malicious computer attacks that can result in a range of security violations, such as, unauthorized user access to a system or the disruption of system services. Traditionally, computer security approaches have focused on preventing such attacks from occurring through the use of firewalls and security policies. In this paper we would like to show how a data mining tool like XLMiner™ can also contribute to intrusion detection by extracting classification rules.
