Error correction techniques play an important role in making wireless communications ever the more efficient and reliable. This paper provides a description of the turbo code used by the UMTS third-generation cellular standard, as standardized by the Third-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). This paper argues through theoretical considerations and simulation results that burst oriented turbo codes (that is turbo codes with trellis termination) are also suitable.
