Abstract

Several multimedia playback systems connect to a multimedia server through the local area network of a residential entertainment system. Each playback system includes a digital audio/video station (DAVS) and a pair of wireless speakers interconnected through 802.11 wireless communications. The multimedia data received from the multimedia server is separated into audio and video data, while the video is displayed by DAVS and the audio is transmitted to wireless speakers. Both the improved real-time transport protocol (RTP) and hybrid time synchronization servers on the DAVS guarantee the smooth audio data streaming and precise stereo sound playback. The experiments demonstrate the packet loss is successfully recovered and the time difference between two wireless speakers is acceptable. The flexibility of relocation of speakers and digital signal processing of sound effect is the advantage of this implementation.
