Abstract

Some research indicated that degree completion rates had decreased as compared with 10 years ago. To address this disparity, we have developed an approach to improve retention of students to increase the graduation rate of students in computer science major while enhancing their learning experience. The group-based collaborative research will not only improve student performance, but also will increase student motivation, confidence and resilience. This paper discusses our small-group-based approach to provide students in their early undergraduate years on the CSULA campus. We provide three software development groups for students to join. Each of group is headed by a graduate teaching assistant under the supervision of the faculty.
