Handheld devices with embedded systems are massively used in modern times due to their characteristics of portability and convenience. In addition to the basic general functions, video and audio capabilities are also indispensable to embedded systems. The performance of application software running on embedded devices is limited to the optimization process done by the manufacturers. In this paper, we analyze the energy consumption of multimedia audio decoding on embedded systems. Given the electric power analysis results, we are able to compress audio data with the best energy conservation ability to replay on embedded systems. By fine tuning audio compression settings of various popular codecs, an energy efficient suggestion is provided for devices with embedded systems.
