This paper presents an analytical model of the interaction between the position loop controller, servo system and the table mechanism in a typical milling machine. It addresses the characterisation of the feed drive system block diagram; modelling of the frictional effects in terms of stiction, coulomb and viscous friction and identification of the position controller and servo system using a commercially available computer-aided control system design (CACSD) package. The model is given in block diagram form and can be used to study the transient and the steady state relationship between the command signal generated by the controller and the table velocity (feed rate) in a closed-loop feedback drive system.
