Hierarchical Cell Structure (HCS) has become a major trend in the design of Third Generation (3G) system networks in order to support the high capacity demand required for multimedia traffic in 3G systems. In this type of network, an efficient call admission scheme is required to improve the Quality of Service (QoS) of the system in terms of dropping probability, blocking probability, and channel utilisation. This paper proposed and analysed a call admission scheme for supporting both voice and data traffic in HCS that uses both guard channels and queuing to handle the communication traffic in the system shows improvement in the performance of the system when a guard channel used.
