The objective of Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem is to minimise fuel cost function of the generator with practical constraints such as tap changing transformers, var sources, etc. In this paper, an improved Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) method is employed to solve the OPF problem with ramp rate limits of the generators. To avoid the premature condition of the conventional PSO, a velocity update has been carried out to improve its performance. Wheeling transactions are also carried out on the test system and their feasibility is checked with the transient stability limit of the generators. Contingency analysis is also carried out on the test system and the system stability is checked. The proposed method has been demonstrated on 10 units, 39-bus New England test system to obtain OPF solution with transient stability limit.
