This paper presents the initial results from a survey conducted among regional small and medium-sized enterprises developing software. The purpose is to form an idea of what practices and means for software modeling that has made it into industry, in particular smaller organizations. The constraints placed on small enterprises when it comes to available resources in terms of time, money, staff, etc. set them apart from the targets of most software modeling efforts, which are larger enterprises. From the answers of the respondents we can draw a tentative conclusion that many SMEs are familiar with a relatively wide range of various modeling methods and notations, but the constraints of small organizations pose high demands on immediate applicability in the organizations.
