This paper presents a multi-layered vision for Service Oriented Architectures and highlights outstanding research challenges in meeting this vision. In particular, we focus on business process and architecture modelling and give an overview of relevant Eclipse tooling for the SOA design space, while discussing missing pieces. We present how several SOA-related standards such as BPMN, BPEL, SCA and JBI can interoperate and introduce some cross-cutting monitoring concepts that are essential for achieving business flexibility.
