In this paper, we propose a novel approach of error resilient coding by introducing a phase-only transform to the low bit MDVQ (Multiple description vector quantization) method. Phase-only transform has the characteristic of shape preserving. Thus the original image could be synthesized using the true phases and the coarser descriptions. When both descriptions are received, a high quality reconstruction can be obtained. On the contrary, if only one description is available, a lower quality image would still be decoded from a received description. Even if an image suffers damages from an eraser channel, a signal with acceptable quality could be rebuilt with our scheme at least. Simulation results show that the proposed method outperforms several other approaches such as pixel interleaving, MDVQ and phase scrambling in PSNR.
