For repair purposes, it was desired to study the problem of covering a square area by a plate of an arbitrary shape, through applying optimal tension and compression forces on the plate boundary so that the obtained square plate could carry as large as possible a uniformly distributed load on its surface. The plate was considered made up of steel. The technique might have broader applications especially in metal forming and the repair of cracks in plate structures.
