The Synchrotron Radiation Computing Group at Daresbury Laboratory develops experiment control and data acquisition software to support scientific research. Here, the authors review their experiences and learning over the past 20 years, examining the organizational structure they use on a project to develop a generic data acquisition (GDA) system. They discuss what worked well, how they adapted methodologies and tools to meet their particular needs, and improvements for the future.
