Abstract

Professionals as well as other types of personnel are finding it increasingly necessary to communicate and gain access to data while on the go or when not pinned to their wired workstations. Much of this is driven by compressed time schedules, busier life styles. At the same time, data of all sorts is being stored on mobile devices that are starting to run local relational database engines, like the Microsoft SQL Server CE. Hence, a distributed database system, which can be formed within a mobile ad hoc network (MANET), is becoming a reality, thus allowing people to submit queries against it. Integrating distributed mobile databases in MANETs is the intended outcome from this research. This paper describes an implementation of a distributed mobile database system built on Pocket PCs that inter-communicate over Bluetooth without going through an access point. The goal of the implementation is to allow Pocket PC users to tap into the disparate data that may be present on mobile databases running on neighboring mobile devices. The implementation realizes an architecture that was developed and assigns one of two main roles to the devices in the network: data directories (DDs) that gather and store the schemas of mobile databases running on close by devices, and mobile database nodes (DBNs) that have databases and are willing to share data through answering queries. This paper describes the details of the implementation and at the end, presents experimental results obtained through building a Piconet out of seven Pocket PCs.
