Abstract

Web-Based Simulation (WBS) is a key component for collaborative work in cyberspace between the users who are separated geographically. Traditional WBS nevertheless has limitations in showing the changes made by the participants in the model development in real-time. Common in most frameworks is posting the result after the changes. While this method can be of some benefit for the users of Modeling & Simulation (M&S), it has significant drawbacks for true collaborative applications such as Virtual Training Environment (VTE), Virtual Classrooms, and Virtual Labs. Our framework in contrast provides a shared view of the entire M&S process in real-time to all of its participants in the virtual environment. In addition, it also allows its participants to share editing of the simulation model via Mob-Write Share-Edit techniques (MWSE). The platform supports Advanced Distance Learning (ADL) where the students join the training session, collaboratively work on their task, launch and interact with their model of choice, select their simulation engine for executions, and perform their training tasks. This paper describes a prototype implementation of the framework. It currently supports three different simulation engines while others can easily be integrated in the system. Furthermore, the paper provides several benchmark examples developed in this prototype and added to the repository.
