Abstract

The paper presents one new approach for processing of scanned old documents. The goal is to achieve efficient archiving with high compression ratio and retained visual quality. The processing comprises image preprocessing used to establish the boundaries of the two main objects, i.e. texts and background, followed by adaptive compression for each object. The parts of the image, containing the background are then compressed with lossy compression, based on multi-layer pyramid decomposition, while the parts containing the text are processed with one-layer lossless compression. The compressed image is transformed in a new format, developed by the authors. In result of the processing the mean compression ratio is increased and the visual quality of the restored image is high.
