This paper describes the binding of the Ada programming language and the SQL database language which is specified in ANSI standard X3.168-1989. Background information is provided on the SQL standard and its language bindings followed by information regarding the history of the Ada binding and the specific goals and values realized by that binding. The procedural binding is described in detail and an overview is provided of the embedded binding. Related efforts to build more abstract bindings are described followed by a brief status of standardization and implementation.
