Can pervasive computing help us build systems that give us a new perspective on our environment? Can we hope for deeper and alternative interactions with animals, insects, and plants under pervasive and ubiquitous computing? UNSEEN, an experience machine for outdoor spaces, continuously collects real-time data on plants, insects, and animals through a multicamera vision system; it interprets this data and shares the results with visitors. The system visualizes change and builds hypotheses on the life forms it observes over an entire summer. The information it shares is meant to inspire and provoke questions rather than just answer them.
