Abstract

We have developed a new type of atmospheric general circulation model for super-high-resolution climate studies. To avoid the pole problem, the model uses a modified icosahedral grid and a newly developed nonhydrostatic scheme. In this paper, we concentrate on the computational aspects of the model, including optimization for a massively parallel supercomputer. We optimized the code to achieve fast calculation on the Earth Simulator (ES) and compared the computational performance with that of the spectral transform model. Our results show that our new approach may be a prototype for future atmospheric general circulation models.
