Abstract

People with severe 'expressive' and 'receptive' disorders useAugmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) symbols torepresent messages in spoken and written communications. TheInternet provides them an opportunity to communicate with not onlyneighbours but also even those who have different language andcultural backgrounds in the far distance. However, theinterpretation of the messages are rather challenging for manypeople because of their abstractness and ambiguity. That is why, weare developing a multimedia communication system based on the useof 'Multimedia Hieroglyph (MH)'. The MH enables users to express amessage by answering a set of questions. It also enablescommunication partners to understand the meaning through multipleviews selected and adapted based on their backgrounds. This paperpresents a new approach for multilingual and multicultural messagepresentations via the MH and its multiple views. Special attentionis paid to implementations and evaluations ofMH-into-Japanese/Chinese translators.
