Abstract

In a wireless sensor network, the problems of determining sensor locations and verifying their coverage after deployment are challenging ones and they are crucial for many wireless sensor applications during deployment and post-deployment assessment. In this paper, we propose a cluster based approach to address these problems using location guided laser beams as stimulating signals to trigger randomly deployed sensor nodes self-organizing into clusters within virtually defined geographical-grids. Each cluster has a cluster header that can communicate with a base station about the cluster location and its membership. Both cluster location and membership information provide valuable measures for sensor network operators to assess the degree of coverage and network connectivity. With a feedback radio link from the base station to the agent that is carrying out the deployment, it is possible for the deployment agent to correct any coverage problems during the deployment phase instead of costly post-deployment reactions.
