Abstract

Computers have become an essential part of modern life, providing services in a multiplicity of ways. Access to theseservices, however, comes at a price: human attention isbound and directed toward a technical artifact in a humanmachineinteraction setting at the expense of time andattention for other humans. This paper explores a new classof computer services that support human-human interactionand communication implicitly and transparently. Computersin the Human Interaction Loop (CHIL), require considerationof all communication modalities, multimodal integration andmore robust performance. We review the technologies andseveral CHIL services providing human-human support.Among them, we specifically highlight advanced computerservices for cross-lingual communication.
