This paper describes progress in the design of unobtru-sive technology for the tracking of participant status andengagement in spoken conversations. The apparatus andalgorithms have applications in human-computer interfacedesign and will enable a better level of communication be-tween an information providing system, or robot, and a hu-man user by mimicking the nonverbal processes that are anessential part of human-human face-to-face spoken interac-tions.
