Abstract

Communication standards are specifications or models of protocols and related systems. To be fit for their purpose they must be sufficiently abstract to be implementation-independent and free from substantial errors, as they will be used many times, and mistakes found after publication are extremely costly. Such standards --- especially Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) --- have therefore over the past ten years been a fruitful area for the trial of formal techniques[l, 3].
