Abstract

The objective of this paper is to present what is at least the authors' general assessment of the state-of-the-art of modeling and simulation in the process industries, which in this context is taken to include the chemical, petrochemical, pulp and paper, metals, waste and water treatment industries but excluding the manufacturing industries such as the automobile industry. Since a number of texts are available on this topic for those readers interested in a more technical treatment, this discussion will tend to be more general, emphasizing such aspects as economic justification, importance of experimental and/or plant data, etc.
