Based on squared differences of the logarithmmically compressed signal envelope, a velocity estimation for moving receiver, constructed by minimum mean-square fitting of a parabola to the sample covariance function is described. The proposed velocity estimator is also capable of tracking various behaviours of mobile receiver. Simulation results show that the proposed method yields good estimation accuracy, with relatively small estimation error. The speed estimates are also used with proposed to a new corner detection method to detect the corner effect in urban cellular systems. Information of corner effect can improve handoff performance and reduce the call dropping rate.
