Much research has been done in recent years in the apparel industry to incorporate different fabrics, mesh designs, nanomaterials and "smart fabrics" for sports, first responder and military apparel. One application of these technologies exists in next-to-skin apparel, where combinations of varying fabrics and/or finishes are being used to provide thermal and moisture management. This paper describes a case study showing how asset teams may effectively communicate to develop multidisciplinary solutions to design problems. In particular, the workflow used to develop a database of the thermal distributions of the human torso will be discussed. This database will be data mined to determine whether the mass-customization of next-to-skin apparel designed to optimize thermal and moisture management is feasible or not.
