This paper is about model based testing. Most reactive systems are safety-critical, so it is vital to test them before their deployment. During testing, the extensional observed behavior of these systems may be different from their intensional behavior. Usually, such systems are modeled by labeled transition systems (LTSs) which are very versatile models. In this paper, we propose an alternative grammar-based modeling of such systems. Our grammar-based model has multiple advantages over the conventional labeled transition system model. One, it makes the test evaluation easier. Two, it supports updates to the extensional behavior. Three, it helps to prove properties about test equivalence, using results from the theory of formal languages.
