Abstract

Natural fibres exhibit noticeable variations in their cross-sections, and measurements taken under the assumption that the cross-section is circular result in errors in the values of its properties. An image-processing system has been developed to give more accurate geometrical information of the fibre cross-section. The image of the cross-section is captured by a digital camera through an optical microscope, and the image is then automatically processed by a computer program to give various measurements of the fibre cross-section. The viability of the system has been demonstrated for obtaining various measurements of the cross-section of sisal fibres.
