Abstract

A Standards group born in a largely unknown ISO subcommittee in charge of character coding succeeded in carrying the audio-visual industry from the analogue to the digital world. MPEG held its first meeting in May 1988 with an attendance of 15 participants and a single session. The typical attendance today is more than 12 times that number with multiple sessions and a web of joint meetings. MPEG standards are employed in such disparate equipment as Video CD and set the top boxes and used to send pictures and the audio over the Web od digitalaudio by radio.
