The Plasma Model for free space-based optical communication in ubiquitous systems is proposed. The Plasma Model provides various operations including dispersion, redirection, retransmission, unicast, multicast and broadcast in potentially long distance sector regions. Details of the model are presented and discussed including technology feasibility. Applications to distributed algorithm development and cluster spacecraft/satellite systems are described. Advantages and disadvantages with typical Radio Frequency based communication are also presented. Collectively, we show that our model, though simple, is an effective alternative to develop a system that compares favorably with either conventional RF wireless systems, or, with other free space optical systems that require precise calculation of receiver locations.
