Abstract

Traffic congestion is one of the leading causes of lost productivity and decreased standard of living in urban areas. The paper applies rough set theory to show the rough relationships between historical and current traffic pattern data and proposes a traffic signal system based on the patterns of historical data. The proposed system does not follow a fixed cycle method which is commonplace in today's traffic light systems. Through the application of probability the system forecasts the traffic loads on lanes and assigns higher credits to a particular one based on the probabilistic values of historical data.
