Abstract

The discipline of informatics continues to emerge as an integral component of information technology. Informatics is defined by the authors as the multidimensional use of technology to support knowledge discovery and dissemination, assisting the decision maker across a variety of academic disciplines and professional fields. As informatics continues to grow, so does the need to provide educational opportunities for students. This paper outlines the purpose, development and teaching methodology of a primer course in informatics. The paper will include a set of topics that may be used as the foundation for a text to accompany the course along with a discussion of lessons learned from teaching the course for the first time.
