Abstract

The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is one of the most important trends in networking in last few years. In spite of the large amount of literature on this topic, there are still some uncertainties about its evolution and functionality. This paper provides the framework for analyzing the evolution of IMS architecture, based on two critical points: Quality of Service (QoS) and Charging and Billing issues. We focus on these two points because the QoS is one of the most appealing characteristics of IMS and charging and billing will determine the acceptance of this architecture. The paper aims to provide a global view of IMS and the most relevant points about its strengths and weakness.
