Abstract

"PC crime is a corporate fact of life, and as proprietary information becomes a strategic resource, its loss through manipulation, theft and viral infection threatens the very survival of businesses [Bakst, pg 44]." Awareness of security is an increasingly important topic in the business world, and in many other areas where computers are an essential part of the organization. As corporations attempt to protect their competitive positions in the national and international markets, managers are striving to prevent situations that could compromise the secrecy of their corporate information. One could speculate that protecting a company's information reserves and its information processing machinery would be a top priority security concern, but it's interesting to note that in a survey of Fortune 500 companies with average MIS budgets of approximately 20 million, over half allocated less than 0.5% to security [Farhoomand and Murphy, pg 67]. Awareness is increasing, but resources have not been allocated in response.
