In order to improve the end-to-end performance of an ad-hoc network, we propose a feedback control mechanism that allows the network layer to adapt its routing protocol dynamically due to changing channel characteristics. In particular, information from the transmission channel, such as Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), can provide valuable information to the source node about the transmission paths as far as ad hoc routing is concerned. We demonstrate our concept by applying it to the Dynamic Source Routing protocol (DSR). In our proposed mo dified DSR, both the route discovery and route selection are based on physical layer parameter and the link monitoring function located at each node. Our preliminary results from this routing scheme, DSR with link state, indicate that the performance metrics (such as throughput, end-to-end delay, Routing overhead etc.) are very good and less disposed to the state changes of the network when compared to the existing routing protocol DSR.
