Abstract

It can be difficult for practitioners to solve problems and make decisions under time constraints. A computer-based teaching system to help make novices become more expert has been conceptualised and a prototype developed for the domain of farm management consultancy. The prototype (SMARTConsultant) is concerned with developing the question asking skills of students to enable them to carry out situation assessment and diagnosis. SMARTConsultant incorporates support for metacognitive activities and scaffolding. The system is generic enough to allow the possibility of its evaluation as a metacognitive shell that can be applied to other domains.
