Abstract

This paper deals with legacy software in the field of numerical algorithms for medical imaging. We describe our work on analyzing, restructuring and enhancing large-scale, monolithic programs in the C programming language, which were developed for creating high-quality medical images from the data acquired using PET --Positron Emission Tomography. The main contribution of the paper is a systematic method of making such programs better structured and more understandable, and also accelerating them by means of parallelization and implementation on parallel multi-processor architectures.
