Abstract

The importance of knowledge management (KM) systems for organizational performance is now well recognized. Seeking to better utilize these systems in concurrent engineering (CE), this article focuses on the implementation considerations of KM systems from different economic perspectives. Specifically, the contribution of this paper is threefold. First, the paper reviews and compares various economic theories on the implementation of KM systems. Their respective ancestors are also identified. Second, based on some extant studies, some important considerations pertinent to the special features of KM are identified. Finally, we offer suggestions for more efficient handling of the identified CE deficiencies and the use of KM as a strategic tool to address those deficiencies.
