This paper describes the incorporation of video podcasts into a Java CS1 course. The motivation and theoretical basis for the podcasts, which are grounded in multimedia learning theory and worked example research, are outlined. Implementation and dissemination challenges are discussed. Preliminary survey results suggest initial integration and promotion of the podcasts were insufficient. Current improvements are outlined and supported by a mid-course questionnaire. A set of "lessons learned" aimed at faculty considering producing video podcasts for their courses is presented.
