Stephen A. Bernhardt's article "Seeing the Text" is timely and the principles he discusses for visual presentation apply as well to the newly-developing genre of electronic multimedia presentation. Localizing principles will be useful for chunking information for selective use by a variety of audiences for a variety of purposes. Intertextual cross-referencing and relationships are increasingly enabled in the new media but rhetorical principles for effective presentation of them are not fully developed. The attention of educators in communication skills must expand to the new media in order to develop principles for effective presentation.
