A concept of a bipolar query for collections of textual documents is introduced by adopting and extending recent developments in fuzzy information modeling in textual information retrieval (IR) and bipolar queries against databases. Properties of bipolar queries and their underlying aggregation operator, and efficient processing of bipolar queries are discussed. Bipolar queries are shown to combine the flexibility provided by fuzzy logic and an ability to represent more sophisticated user preferences. This may be crucial for searching vast Internet resources.
