Development of computer-based applications by end users themselves is a new phenomenon that is gaining rapid acceptance today. A field study of user development of computer-based applications (UDA) was carried out in ten large Canadian business enterprises. A research model representing the key success factors for UDA activities was developed from the available literature. In-depth interviews of users and DP managers in the firms were carried out to evaluate the model. A revised, improved version of the model emerged from those interviews. This paper presents and discusses the two versions of the model.
