Abstract

Web APIs are slicing the Web into separate data silos because they don't rely on standardized mechanisms for identifying, retrieving, and representing data. To overcome this fragmentation, the Linked Data principles provide guidelines on how to use standardized Web technologies to set data-level links between data from different sources. As data providers increasingly adopt the Linked Data principles, a Web of Linked Data is forming—a global data space that already contains billions of assertions. This article discusses linked data in relation to Web APIs, gives an overview of the current extend and content of the Web of Linked Data, and outlines the potentials of linked data technologies for e-Government.
