Address auto-configuration process is one of the most essential issues of Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs). Before nodes participate in multi-hop or internet communications, they must be assigned IP addresses. Uniqueness and fast assignment of the IP addresses in MANETs are the main topics of the auto-configuration process. The Logical Hierarchical Addressing (LHA) protocol was proposed to handle these topics in MANETs. The paper evaluates the performance of LHA in comparison to two well-known approaches, namely PROPHET and MANETConf. The evaluation has been achieved using the network simulator 2 (ns2). Our analysis shows LHA minimizes the address assignment latency and overhead, thus outperforming the other studied protocols. A main advantage of LHA lies in its stable performance regardless of the applied scenario. In contrast, the position of nodes in the applied scenario highly affects the performance of PROPHET as well as MANETConf.
