Abstract

To provide continuous Quality-of-Service in mobility scenarios, advance reservation should be performed at the location to which a mobile node is expected to move. However, since these reserved resources in advance are not used before the arrival of the mobile node (or only can be used by best effort flows), resource waste is involved. The issue how to minimize this waste is addressed in this paper. We propose, firstly, that advance reservation is triggered when the mobile node's distance to the edge of its serving access router's coverage area is optimal. A mathematical model is developed to calculate this optimal distance. In our analysis, we investigate the impact of some parameters on the optimal distance. Second, we demonstrate that path-decoupled reservation technique can provide better performance than path-coupled reservation when being adopted for mobility scenarios, because path-decoupled reservation incurs much less setup delay. The impact of the reservation delay on session's success probability and access router's capacity is analyzed
