Battery energy efficiency is very critical for prolonging the lifetime of nodes in WSNs. The applied modulation scheme and its parameters are the two important factors to affect the energy consumption of nodes. In this paper, resorting theoretical analysis and numerical search, an energy-efficient PPM scheme, tailored for WSNs, is optimized with respect with the constellation size M to minimize the actual battery energy consumption over a link between two nodes of a WSN in Rayleigh fading channels. The results show the existence of optimal parameter for every practical distance and the overall noticeable optimization performance.
