Wake on wireless: an event driven energy saving strategy for battery operated devices

We participated in an initiative by K Academy, a boarding school combining junior and senior high school, to become a ubiquitous school. We utilized WLAN (wireless LAN) as an access network and covered the whole site of 130,000 square meters with approximately 300 AP (Access Points). A feature of this ubiquitous school is the focus on providing lifestyle support rather than learning support. Lifestyle support aims to provide students with an environment that assists them to achieve a safe and amenable living environment where they can devote themselves to study. Specifically it realizes functions that include making emergency contact, confirmation of whereabouts, meal bookings and confirmation and cashless transactions. These functions are accessed via electronic student organizers used as ubiquitous terminals. For the ubiquitous terminal a WLAN-IP hand-held mobile device was newly developed, containing an IC card and equipped with a biometric authentication function. Learning support utilizes a Thin Client PC that is authenticated by a mobile device. We conducted an evaluation based on the development process and one year of operational results.
