Abstract

The current US standard for encryption viz. the AES derives its security strength due to its neat algebraic structure based on arithmetic in Galois Fields. It has been accepted by the National Security Agency to secure the information in the SECRET as well as TOP SECRET category. However, with the recent surge in the published attacks on the algebraic structure of the AES, it is essential to relook and investigate the structural weaknesses in the cipher. In this paper, our aim is to investigate and research various attacks on the AES and propose a structured classification to understand clearly the generic nature of the attacks. Such a structural organization would further help in analyzing the feasibility of applying AES in various environments, including the resources constrained sensor networks. To the best of our knowledge, ours is a unique attempt at presenting a broad taxonomy of all the possible attacks on the AES.
